Michigan Legal Age to Work and Other Requirements

Michigan Legal Age to Work and Other RequirementsMichigan Legal Age to Work and Other RequirementsMany adults cant wait for their scheduled vacation time so they can kick back and enjoy elend working for a spell, but if youre a young person, you may be a lot more eager to become employed and begin earning your own money. Michigan has laws regarding the minimum legal age to work in the state. If, in fact, youre old enough to work, there are limits to how many hours you can work per week or per day. There are also differences between the amount of time you can work during the school year versus when you can work when school is out. Working in Michigan as a Youth If youre a youth whod like to join the labor force in Michigan, youll need a child employment certificate. The state requires these certificates for all kids under age 18. You canobtain an employment certificate from your school. Although youll need an employment certificate, Michigan does elend require that minor workers h ave age certificates. Minimum Age to Work in Michigan Underfederal child labor laws, the minimum age to work is 14 with some exceptions. But child labor laws in each state can supersede federal law. States often have their own minimum ages to work and they determine which permits are necessary. When theres a conflict between federal and state laws, the more restrictive law applies. If a states law says that a child can begin working at 12 years old but the federal government says the age is 14, the child would have to wait until age 14 regardless of his states more lenient rule. Thats not a problem in Michigan because the state says youths can generally begin working at 14 in a number of fields, so its rules are in line with those at the federal level. But there are a few additional rules regarding hours and school attendance. Other Minor Labor Laws If youre in the 14- to 15-year-old age bracket, you may work between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. There are limitations on how long you can work, however. You cant be in school and at work collectively for more than 48 hours per week, so if your school day is six hours, youll spend 30 hours in school per week- six multiplied by five is 30. That means you cant work more than 18 hours per week. If youre an older teen who falls in the 16- to 17-year-old age bracket, you can work between the hours of 6 a.m. and 1030 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday. You still cant work and be in school collectively for more than 48 hours, and you cant work for more than 24 hours per week while school is in session. Teens may work longer hours when school is not in session during the summer and extended school holiday breaks. Summer vacation is legally defined as June 1 through Labor Day. Youre not allowed to work during regular school hours if youre age 15 or younger. Child Workers Michigan allows children under the age of 14 to work in some very limited capacities. Childrenbetween the ages of 11 and 14 can work as athlet ic referees at sports matches that include children younger than they are. Children in this age group may also work as caddies for golf or bridge. Lastly, juveniles 13 and up can get work setting traps for informal clay shooting events. Why you should give away your big idea (to everyone, for free)

Why you should give away your big idea (to everyone, for free)Why you should give away your big idea (to everyone, for free)Next Big Idea Club curator, world-leading business thinker, and 1 bestselling author Daniel Pink sat down with Henry Timms, co-author ofNew Power How Power Works in Our Hyperconnected World- and How to Make It Work for You, to talk about how to supercharge your next project, campaign, or business endeavor with the power of the connected crowd. This article is a condensed version of the interview.Join the Next Big Idea Clubto view Pink and Timms full conversation.PinkLets talk about these principles of new power- you want your parteicipants to create and construct, rather than simply comply. You want to have people uploading, rather than merely downloading. How can I take these principles and become a better leader?TimmsThe place to start is to think about what youre inviting people to do. In the old power world, when we talk about wanting our ideas to spread or s tarting a movement, we often mean that we just want mora fans, right? We want even more people to admire us, or to buy our product but if all youre asking them to do is admire your work or validate you, youre never going to get very far.The question is how to ask people to do more, how to build them up. How do you create people who can own your message, actually shape it themselves and turn it into something new? Can you allow them a real sense that this is their idea, not just yours?Giving Tuesday is a good example of that. We started that idea, but the reason it spread is that we were genuinely committed to the idea of other people owning that idea. The people who run Giving Tuesday at the University of Michigan who turned it into Giving Blueday have as high an ownership stake as we do.PinkLets say Im starting a business- how do I fold these principles into my business plan?TimmsWell from a business perspective, one piece of work that we are focused on is how money is flowing diff erently- how do people think about transactions? In the new power world, we have this idea of the participation premium, which says that if you want to get people engaged, your products need to have three key elements to them. One, it needs to be a great product- its an economic transaction. Two, it needs to have a kind of altruistic sense to it. You need to feel like youre part of a community by being a part of that product. Three, you need to create ways in which people can actually come into this, and bring their own ideas to the table.Theres this incredible story about a video game calledStar Citizen. This famous game designer who had disappeared for 10 years comes back, and he says, Im going to save the PC game. This is the age of Angry Birds and Candy Crush, and people have stopped playing PC games. He cant get any money from traditional backers, so he goes to the crowd and says, Help me back this game,Star Citizen. Lets co-create this universe together- we can imagine what it c ould be like, what your ships could be like.Early on, they had a lot of message boards, a lot of fan fiction, a lot of creativity. Fans started creating their own radio stations, and they start raising all this money. So very quickly, they get three million dollars, which is pretty good since they only needed two to make the game. But they keep raising money. They get to 15 million dollars. They keep raising money. Then they say to their fans, Why dont you buy ships for this future world? Buy a ship now, and then when the game exists, youll have a ship in your hangar. So they start buying ships that will exist when this game is released.Eventually, they raise $75 million. They hire Mark Hamill and Gillian Anderson fromThe X-Filesto do voice-over for the characters. They create new symphonies. They create new languages. Almost $200 million has now been raised, and the game still doesnt exist. The game is now three or four years late, and obviously, a lot of people think this is a Ponzi scheme. But actually, when you talk to the people inside this world, theyre seeing huge value created already, because they have this real sense of purpose. Theyre part of something. Theyre part of building this amazing cause, part of this world being created, and they feel like they can genuinely shape the product. If youre starting a small business, you can look at a story like that and think, Well, this is just a crazy video game story. Or you can think, There are some lessons in this that can help me. Whatever your product is, can you connect it to a peer community and purpose? Whatever your product is, how are you giving people real ways they can get their hands on it and shape it themselves? That is about giving up some control.Join the Next Big Idea Clubto view Pink and Timms full conversation.

The Top 10 Employee Referral Software Solutions

The Top 10 Employee Referral Software Solutions The Top 10 Employee Referral Software Solutions Welcome to Top 10, Recruiter.coms weekly rundown of the bestof the best in recruiting Every Friday, we release a list of some of our favorite people, things, and ideas dominating the industry. From awesome tech tools and cool companies to great books and powerful trends, no stone in the recruiting space will be left unturned. This WeekTop 10 Employee Referral Software SolutionsReferrals are the best way to hire, hands down. Referred candidates take less time to hire (29 days as opposed to 39 for candidates hired through job posts and 55 days for candidates hired through career sites). They tend get up to speed more quickly than outside hires do, and theyre 13 percent more likely to stick around for the long term. Overall, referred candidates are also more productive and happier at work than their non-referred counterparts. But referrals dont just happen. You need to put an employee referra l program (ERP) in place and encourage your employees to participate which is a pretty major task in itself.Thats why so many employee referral software solutions have emerged over the years to help employers get their ERPs up and running smoothly.Today, were highlighting ten such employee referral platforms that we believe to be the cream of the crop1. JobviteWhen it comes to recruiting software in general, Jobvite is usually a good choice. If you need a platform to help you source, hire, onboard, etc., then Jobvite probably has the functionality youre looking for. One of the things Jobvite does especially well is employee referrals. In particular, we like the custom Facebook application that allows employees to send their connections private invitations to apply for open jobs.Sia Mohajer of Online Resume Builders was one of the many people who nominated Jobvite for our list. Heres what Mohajer had to say Jobvite allows employees to use their own social networks to make referrals. The biggest advantage of this is, as an employer, you dont need to spend time on job boards or searching through hundreds of generic resumes. Learn more.2. RolePointThe coolest thing about RolePoint is the platforms automatic role-matching feature, which aligns employees contacts with the roles theyre most suited for, thereby increasing the chances that any given referral will be a good match.RolePoint also has some seriously powerful predictive analytics capabilities that allow users to review and adjust their recruitment processes continuously which is absolutely necessary if you want to keep your ERP running effectively at all times.Learn more.3. ZaoZao expands your referral network and makes rewards administration a breeze at the same time. Rather than limiting participation to existing employees, Zao lets vendors, company alumni, and pretty much anyone else who comes across a job post distributed by your employees to get in on the fun. This builds a chain of referrers, so to speak, and everyone along the chain gets rewarded. So, if a friend of a friend of an employee is hired, the employee and the employees friend get rewardedThat sounds complicated, I know, but dont worry You dont have to keep track of the chains. Zao does it for you.Learn more.4. ReferagigAside from having one of the best names ever (go ahead, say it outloud its fun), Referagig also has the benefit of being totally browser-based. That means that no matter where you or your employees are, everyone can access Referagig as long as they have an web connection.Referagig also does an excellent job of keeping employees updated as their referrals move through the process, which helps keep engagement levels high. Employees wont feel like theyre throwing names into a black hole instead, theyll actually feel like theyre playing important roles in the companys success.Learn more.5. SimpplerSimppler also landed a spot on our list of the top staffing and recruiting startups, and it definitely deser ves a repeat mention here. Data is the name of the game in HR and recruiting today, and Simppler has brought it to the employee referral game. Thanks to some nifty machine-learning algorithms, Simppler can zero in on the best connections for employees to refer for any given job. It takes almost all the effort out of your ERP Employees just make a few clicks, and Simppler takes care of the rest.Learn more.6. BoonIf you and your employees like gamification, then check out Boon. By collecting information about a number of variables, the platform gives employees Boon scores based on how many referrals they send in and how well those referrals do in the hiring process. If competition gets your team motivated, then Boon is the best way to get the referrals flowing.Learn more.7. ZalpZalp calls itself The Employee Referral Booster, which binnenseems like an accurate title based on the customer testimonials and the companys claim that it can triple your number of referral hires. If youre the t ype to take a companys claims about itself with a grain of salt a reasonable thing to do then maybe this will carry some weight Zalp allows employers to implement micro reward strategies in which employees can be rewarded for every action they take to promote your jobs and bring in referrals. That sounds to us like a pretty good way to boost employee participation enough to triple your referral hires.Learn more.8. ReffindSo many app developers describe their products as Tinder for X these days that its become a bit of a joke. To its credit, Reffind doesnt actually call itself Tinder for employee referrals, but if it did, it would be justified in doing so.Basically, it works like this Employees open the app, and they see a series of open jobs at the organization. They swipe left on the ones they cant help you fill and right on the ones they can help you fill. When they swipe right, theyre taken to a screen where they can share the job with the relevant contacts.Reffind is simple, i ntuitive, quick, and pretty damn nice to look at, too.Learn more.9. PerksWhen you think Perks, you may not think employee referral program. If anything, you probably think about, well, employee perks. But dont forget that one of the best ways to ensure your ERP gets buy-in from employees is to offer the right rewards. Thats why, despite what you might believe, Perks is a great company to partner with if you want to build an awesome ERP that works. Not only does a Perks ERP give you access to the tools your employees need to make great referrals, but it also gives you access to the best collection of rewards. And Perks handles the rewards fulfillment, which means you can focus on the candidates coming your way.Learn more.10. EmployeeReferrals.comFirst of all, you have to give them credit for snagging that URL. That being said, EmployeeReferrals.com is more than just a great Web address its also a great employee referral software, thanks in part to how easy it is to use. Employees can make referrals in just three clicks, with the average referral taking about two minutes. Heck, employees dont even have to register or log in to use the app When referrals are such a breeze, more employees will participate in the program which means more referrals for you.Learn more.

6 Biggest Advertising Failures of All Time

6 Biggest Advertising Failures of All Time6 Biggest Advertising Failures of All TimeAdvertising isnt a science. You can have all the data in the world at your disposal, and you can employ the brightest minds in the industry, but you cant predict how well a campaign will do. Agencies put work in front of focus groups and adjust their campaigns accordingly, but its still a rare ad that hits it out of the park. And some are spectacular failures. A few disastrous campaigns stand head and shoulders above the rest for one reason or another. These badeanstalt ads actually boosted sales in some bizarre cases, but there welches no getting around the negative press and horrendous feedback they brought on the brands. 1.DiGiornos Pizza WhyIStayed Sometimes a quick tweet on a trending hashtag can be brand gold. The famous Oreo tweet You Can Still Dunk in the Dark was published during the 2013 Super Bowl blackout and it cost almost nothing, yet it garnered mora publicity than the multi-1000000 -dollar spots that aired that year- or didnt air, depending on the time. But social media trends are here one minute and gone the next, and that can sometimes present a problem. The trick is to react to something quickly enough to ride the wave, but carefully enough to get the tone and the meaning right. Sadly, DiGiornos pizza jumped on the trending WhyIStayed hashtag without understanding what it implied. WhyIStayed was, and still is, a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse. Victims have used two different tags- WhyIStayed, and WhyILeft- to highlight the many reasons they remained trapped in a horrible situation for years. DiGiornos misread the hashtag entirely and wrote You had pizza. The condemnation was swift and brutal. The community manager responsible started personally replying to every tweet to apologize, using the official DiGiornos account. It was a real mess that could have been easily avoided if someone had just spent 60 seconds on research. 2.Bud Light UpFor Whatever Another hashtag, another marketing disaster. This time the brand in question didnt jump on a trending hashtag but instead created its own. In theory, its an interesting idea- quite a few people would admit to being up for whatever after a few beers. And the campaign itself made good on that idea, with a Super Bowl ad that gave one Bud Light drinker the night of his life a limo ride with Reggie Watts, professional styling by Minka Kelly, going to a party with Don Cheadle, and playing ping-pong with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Awesome But things took a nasty turn when the advertising campaign spilled over into other tactics, such as the label on the bottle. The phrase the perfect beer for removing no from your vocabulary for the night went into the territory of date rape. Budweiser apologized and the offending bottles were removed from circulation, but the damage had been done. 3.Coca-Cola New Coke The cola wars were in their prime in 1985, and Pepsi and Coke were sparring it out with full blown ad campaigns. The Pepsi Challenge seemed to prove that people actually preferred the taste of Pepsi to Coke in a blind taste test. That worried the people at Coca-Cola. In fact, it worried them so much that they decided to change the products 100-year-old formula...again, before doing their research. They launched New Coke to the world in April 1985 before they realized that the data was wrong. Yes, people initially liked the Pepsi flavor over Coke- that first taste in a sip test. But overall, more people preferred the slightly less sweet Coke formula when drinking a whole can. Cokes decision to up the sweetness of its product failed miserably. Millions of dollars were spent on the reformulation, new packaging, and ad campaigns, but the efforts actually tarnished the companys image. Pepsi got a big bump from the New Coke disaster. Coca Cola announced in July, just a few months later, in July, that it had made a huge mistake and that the old Coke was returning. S ome people think it was a cunning move to get people loving Coke again, but thats probably not the case considering the amount of money that was wasted and the stain on the companys image. 4.Starbucks Race Together Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is a polarizing figure, to say the least. Hes involved his company in some rather controversial topics over the years, including same-sex marriage and gun control, so it didnt seem like a big leap for him to dive into the race relations pool. The campaign was kicked off in the New York Times with an unmissable all black full-page ad containing the phrases, Shall We Overcome? and RaceTogether, along with the company logo. It soon became evident to customers that the chain wanted to talk to them about race relations in the U.S. Schultz had been working with employees for months on the subject, encouraging them to talk about racial issues with those who stopped in for a cup of joe. Big mistake. You want a coffee jolt and maybe a snack when yo u go to Starbucks. You do not want to be confronted by a barista who asks you how you feel about affirmative action or the disproportionate number of African Americans in prison. This is a topic that can cause extreme tension, to say the least, and even physical reactions. Luckily, Schultz realized what a mistake he had made after just six days, and he pulled the Race Together campaign. 5.Ford Edsel Ford released a new car to the American public on September 5, 1957. It was going to be the big one, designed to provide a premium experience for the middle class, a car with style and refinement. It oozed sophistication. Ford was so confident in its creation that it sunk over $250 million into the project, roughly $2.1 1000 milliarden in todays dollars. The car was the infamous Edsel. It was a perfect storm of hubris, expectation, and ignorance. It all started with focus groups and endless polls designed to find out just what the American people wanted, but then the research was ign ored in favor of designs that were already in the early stages of production. The please all of the people all of the time mentality resulted in 18 different variations of the Edsel being presented at launch. The data collected was also ignored when it came time to sell the cars, with scientifically formulated methods being dumped in favor of some very sketchy tactics. The first models pushed on the general public werent ready. They had oil leaks, sticking trunks and hoods, and a variety of buttons that would have confounded Einstein. To add insult to injury, the company kept trying to push different versions of the Edsel over the next few years. But no one wanted the car. It was considered a horrible piece of machinery, and Ford lost $350 million on it at the end of the day- $2.9 billion when adjusted for inflation. 6.Hoover Free Flights Its not often that a marketing campaign self-destructs so badly that it brings the company to its knees, but this classic goof did just that i n 1992. Hoover is a name synonymous with vacuuming, particularly in the U.K. That kind of brand name recognition is gold, so youd think it could withstand a marketing campaign that was a little off in the financial calculations. But Hoovers gaffe went way beyond some crummy math. The company had a massive backlog of ageing stock that it wanted to shift, and shift quickly. Someone thought the best way to do this would be to offer the customers a deal they couldnt refuse- two free plane tickets to the U.S. when they purchased more than 100 ($135) in Hoover products. It was an insane deal, virtually unaffordable. Updated for inflation, that would the equivalent of spending just $236 to receive about $1,500 in airfare. Hoover was basically giving every customer over $1,250. Of course, the general public flocked to get the Hoovers, and the demand was too much for the company to handle. Over 222,000 people managed to get their round-trip tickets, and Hoover was over 50 million- $68 millio n- in the hole. That would equate to around $120 million today. The company couldnt handle that kind of loss, and the British division of Hoover was sold off to the Italian manufacturer Candy. The lesson Run your marketing idea past a few of your companys accountants before committing to a project. Hoover has never fully recovered from the debacle.

Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity

Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity Studies from the likes of Silkroad, Jobvite, CareersXRoads and the even the U.S. Department of Labor all tell us that employee referrals are the No. 1 source of hire, generally being more influential than the almighty jobs boards and career sites, the golden gateway to employment for the mass market job seeker. Research by Evolv has also shown that, during the first 200 days, referred workers are more productive due to them having a more realistic view of the job and better internal networks. The Evolv survey also showed that referred workers are 20 percent less likely to quit their jobs. Its no surprise then that more and more companies are starting to increase their dependence on word-of-mouth hiring/employee referrals and of course this paradigm shift has been greatly assisted by social technologies. Yes, a New York Times piece shows that employee referr als now account for 45 percent of non entry-level placements at Ernst and Young, which isup from 28 percent in 2010. The piece also cited a Federal Bank of New York study which revealed that referred candidates had a 40 percent better chance of being recruited than other candidates. It seems like we are entering a new age of highly efficient and effective referral based recruitment which will eventually banish all other more meritocratic forms of recruitment to the graveyard (or at least into the outer recesses of corporate dark space). But, this all sounds too good to be true, doesnt it? Well, your suspicions are right all that glitters is notlage gold. While I am in no way going to launch a tirade on the evils of using employee referrals in the selection process, there are certain perils and pitfalls of this form of hiring that I wish to draw your attention to, in particular, the potential negative impact that employee referrals can have on your companys diversity agenda. For exampl e, the Federal Bank of New York study mentioned above showed that 63.5 percent of employers referred applicants of the same sex and 71.5 percent favored the same race or ethnicity. So, the more that a company increases its dependency on referrals, the bigger the negative impact on its diversity agenda. We already know that there is a natural tendency for people to want to hire others who they like, share interests with and can be friends with, as shown in the study,Hiring as Cultural Matching The Case of Elite Professional Service Firms. This means that too high a dependency on employee referrals can mean that anincreasingly homogeneous stream of applicants will be entering the hiring process. In other words, heavily relaying upon employee referrals can lead to a monoculture. While monocultures may be great for social cohesion, they are bad for business. For example, a study of 14,000 leaders by Talent Innovations concluded that organizations need a balance of both male and female lea ders if they are to be truly effective. Another study by the leistungspunkt Suisses Research Institute of 2,400 leaders between 2005 and 2011 showed that stocks with at least one woman on the board outperformed those with no women on the board by 26 percent. Another report by DiversityInc showed that over a 10-year period, the top 50 companies for Diversity outperformed the Nasdaq by 28 percent, the SP 500 by 25 percent and the Down Jones Industrial Average by 22 percent. So, 1) since monocultures have been shown to beto some degreedetrimental to modern business and 2) since a side effect of employee referrals hiring is increasing homogeneity of the workforce, employers should strike a balance between employee referrals hiring and hiring on the open market. What is the right ratio? There isnt a specific number, but the rule of thumb from The New York Times article seemed to be to not go over the 50 percent mark for employee referrals hiring versus open market hiring.

These 2 super successful cofounders say everyone needs a work wife

These 2 super successful cofounders say everyone needs a work wifeThese 2 super successful cofounders say everyone needs a work wifeYou could never put together a heist with women. LikeOceans Elevenwith women wouldnt work because two would keep breaking off to talk sh-t about the other nine. John Mulaney famously made this joke pre-Oceans 8 getting the green light. Though he is a brilliant comedian, he underestimates the power of female friendships in the workplace (well just count a heist as a workplace this one time.)In a social setting, his assessment may be right but in this tricky era when two women come together in geschftsleben as both geschftsleben partners and friends, they can truly be unstoppable. If you have a great work wife, you dont even need the six other women to pull off the jewelry heist.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe concept of the work wife has actually been around for years but it was reserved for career men who basically needed a wife, but one that did all their office duties. However, over the years as more women entered the workforce both the term and the role began to take on a new meaning.Having a work wife has not only become a necessity but has actually been the driving force behind some of the most successful companies to emerge in the last decade. That relationship, which is so core to a successful business, is what Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, the founders of fashion e-commerce business Of a Kind, took a deep dive on in their new book appropriately titled Work Wife The Power of Female Friendship to Drive Successful Businesses(Ballantine Books.)There is no one more fitting to write this book as Cerulo and Mazur honigwein in college and after working in respective jobs till they were 26, they decided to take that big risk and start their own company in 2010 (which was later acquired by Bed, Bath Beyond.) In the book, o ut today, they wroteIn making the transition from friends to business partners all those years ago, we knew we were signing up for a much more complex relationship than when we met as undergrads at the University of Chicago. We went from seeing each other weekly to spending more time together than we did sleeping. Finances became a constant topic of conversation, and not just in the context of whether one of us was feeling too broke for a dinner date. We spent our nights, weekends, and soon 9-to-5s each making decisions that would affect the other. Our careers and our futures became intertwined. The book not only explores Cerulo and Mazurs multi-layered relationship but also the work-wife stories of other successful female duos (and some trios) including the women behind Lizzie Fortunato, Food52, the Go Fug Yourself blog, Radical Monarchs, and Plum Alley Investments. But unterstellung stories arent just about sweet meet-cutes but rather that there is actually a substantial formula th at uses the qualities that underlie a strong female friendship and enables women to build super successful businesses.Cerulo told Ladders, We realized five years into the business our producest accomplishment professionally has been the partnership that we have built and nurturedand the special place it holds. It is a business and a professionalpartnership but it is also a friendship andthat is so core to it.But why, specifically, do female friendships translate so well to this work wife/business partnership format? Mazur said, When you think about it the qualities that are endemic to female friendships like vulnerability, emotional transparency, collaboration, etc., they are qualities that are really beneficial to the workplace. If you bring into business relationships that already have these qualities then youre making it so much easier to live up to them. Women have a real sense of accountabilitywith one another. I think in my relationship with Ericathat has improved the quality of the work.On finding your work wifeBut how does one spot the right work wife in a sea of women? Look for similar work ethics and each others standards. Work and product and all of that. Also a willingness to be really vulnerable with each other. Well, I endorse starting a business with a friend I dont know if I have any other friends other than Erica I would start a business with, Mazur said. We had the right friendship that ticked all the right boxes when it came to our passions and career ambition and the business we were starting. Its really important to look at whats going to be important in your working partnership and understanding how those qualities will mesh in that space. On being viewed by your employeesThe book uses many quotes from fictional work wives including Leslie Knope (Parks Recreation), Christina Yang (Greys Anatomy) and Ilana Wexler (Broad City) to accentuate points but one quote featured from a real person is from actor, producer, and writer Mindy Kaling. Sh e said in an interview in 2013, I love women who are bosses and who dont constantly worry about what their employees think of them. I love women who dont ask, Is that OK? Women put extra pressure on themselves when it comes to being judged by their employees and work wife partners, are no exception. No one wants to be labeled as the mean one. Except, luckily, a work wife provides the gut check you didnt have before.Cerulo told Ladders, You have to realize you arent competing with one another and to actively remind yourself of that, you are in this together, you are collaborating. It is about the we and raising the tide. The flip side in worrying about what employees think is that we can bounce things off each other. That request we made of that employee was totally sane. You get to gut check things which is a huge boost. On balancing the relationshipThough many of these work wife relationships started as friendships, when you start a company it can become all business all the time. S o how do you make sure the friendship is still preserved? Were always thinking about it the company. This is our baby. Its actually harder to turn it off and talk about friend stuff. But weve gotten better about that over the years. We both had a lot of personal stuff happen last year. I had a baby, Erica was longdistance with her husband for a little bit because of his job, there was familymedical stuff and I think with having things that cant be ignored, it reminded us of that, Mazur said. We got better at scheduling friend dates. Setting aside time. Theres a difference between scheduling a day at the spa together and scheduling a manicure before a meeting. One is clear that you are gonna be friends, the other is Lets prep for this meeting while we get our nails done. She added, And we also have regular weekday check-ins with each other. Obviously, we sat next to each otherand talked to each otherall day, but unless we have that structure where we flow through an agenda and tick of f the same boxes every week certain things just fall through the cracks. On men being work wivesThough it is called a work wife, men can definitely fill this role too. There are takeaways for both men and women from the book. Friendships should be privileged in the workplace. But there arent built in structures for friend partnerships. We encourage people to create real relationships and work truly as partners, said Mazur.Cerulo added, Men can carry out the same philosophies in their friendships and work relationships that we lay out in the book. I think its just about the same values women have often privileged in their relationships and I think more and more men are because of the way blessedly men are now being socialized and raised. A willingness to be open and emotional and transparent and compassionate and to bring those things into their day to day personal interactions.Featured photo creditKat HarrisThe Refined Woman for Freda SalvadorYou might also enjoyNew neuroscience reve als 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Your Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time - The Muse

Your Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time - The MuseYour Job Shouldnt Be Fun Work All the Time Recently, I had drinks with some friends and a few of their friends. Eager to get to know new people, I started chatting with one parteicular person about herbei job. Her responsibilities include riding boats with fishermen to regulate the environmental impact of their work. After browsing through gorgeous pictures of her daily travels, I couldnt help but exclaim, Your job looks like so much funWhen I told her what I do- which is mainly sit at a desk and write stuff- it suddenly felt a lot less cool and exciting. Saddled with that newfound distaste for my seemingly boring desk job, I quickly reminded myself of something important No job is fun all of the time. You may say, But Alyse, what about Netflix watchers or ice cream tasters? What about people who work on movie sets, in breweries, or for video game companies? To which Id respond, sure, those could be fun- Id have no reason to think ot herwise (hit me up when I change careers to work at Ben and Jerrys). But, you know whats far more likely? Theyre also hard work, like any other job.I have a friend who has in fact worked on a movie set. Hell be the first to tell you that seeing famous people up close and being part of a film coming to fruition is pretty thrilling, but hed also admit that his day-to-day work was surprisingly uneventful. Your job can and should be a lot of things- fulfilling, energizing, rewarding, challenging- but it doesnt always have to be fun. And you shouldnt expect it to be.This isnt to say that you wont (or shouldnt) be happy in your career, or that you wont have exciting moments. Interviewing one of the first undocumented lawyers in NY state and turning our work area into a creepy carnival for our companys Halloween desk decorating competition were truly fun experiences Ive had on the job. My point is that your role isnt necessarily meant to be a 24/7 enjoyable experience- thats why you get a paycheck for doing it. Your job will never (and isnt meant to) inspire the same sense of glee that say, riding a roller coaster, watching a football game, or partying with your friends on a Friday night does. And think about it If riding roller coasters was your day job, wouldnt it eventually become less fun? Watching Netflix on the weekends can be a blast, but if it was an obligation five days a week, dont you think itd lose that appeal? When I reconnected with that friend of a friend at another gathering, I asked her how her job was going. This time, I didnt immediately jump in to say something about how awesome her latest trip looked, and Im glad I didnt. Instead, I let her vent about some of the more frustrating parts of her role (see, even she has them) and we talked about her long-term plans.Remember, whats considered fun is different for everyone, and it exists both inside and outside the workplace. But its not a constant and ever-present force. Realistically, you cant enjoy y ourself all of the time- no matter where you are or what youre doing. Ill end on this note Be OK with a career that isnt always fun. Focus on the things that matter more- cultivating the skills and interests you value, making change that means something to you, and interacting with people who make you feel good. Its this stuff that proves that your career is about way more than just having a good time.
